The pace of technology is equally enabling and disrupting the way we work, and nowhere is that more evident than within Austin’s creative sector, with artists to engineers delivering innovation on a daily basis. Austin’s vaunted culture and robust, resilient economy are thanks, in part, to the deep pool of local creative talent that inspires and entertains us. And yet, despite our collective prosperity, many of our creative professionals are struggling to find their place in a media-savvy, tech-powered world.

  • How is technology impacting creative expression, for both creators and consumers? For employers? For our city’s brand?
  • How can we support, educate, and develop Austin’s creative workforce to thrive in a changing economy, including a growing media tech sector?
  • How do we bridge the gap(s) between our world-class creative cohort and our world-changing tech cohort?

In this session, we’ll explore how and where creative professionals can leverage platforms, practices, and more to spark new opportunities, keep pace with innovation, and learn and master the skills needed to thrive in the new economy.

KALINDA HOWE is the Manager of Office Operations and Culture for Condé Nast Co/Lab, the digital side of the New York-based publishing company. A native Austinite, she has found a passion in ensuring that companies are adapting their culture to the city surroundings, as well as reflecting the overall company values in the day-to-day employee experience. The more creativity finds a home in technology, the more the modern workplace will need to become a compelling destination with an exciting culture. From recruitment to retention, Kalinda’s daily top focus is connection and relationship-building among employees, the company, and the community.

PATRICK McGARRY is currently incarnated as the head of community for data.world working to spread the open data gospel.  An experienced community manager, gamer, mischief maker, and all around geek, Patrick spent his early community career writing and managing Slashdot under the nomme du keyboard ‘scuttlemonkey.’  More recently Patrick served as the director of community for the Ceph open source project at the startup ‘Inktank,’ and later for Red Hat after a successful acquisition. Patrick enthusiastically helps companies to understand and adopt Open Source ideals and continues to be a strong advocate of FOSS on the desktop and in the enterprise.

PAUL O’BRIEN works in Venture Capital Economic Development, serving the investment and venture capital economies directly, through thought leadership, consulting, and startup development. He’s the founder of MediaTech Ventures, a founder and managing director of the Texas Technology Council, Director of Founder Institute Austin, and mentor to entrepreneurs throughout Texas.

Notably O’Brien’s early career was through Yahoo! and Hewett-Packard. From there he led the early growth of startups such as Outright.com (acquired by GoDaddy), Zvents (acquired by eBay’s Stubhub), and MicroVentures (Venture Capital). With technical expertise, O’Brien has consulted with various web properties, designed and developed sites, online communities, e-commerce stores, and web services. Paul was featured in the book Online Marketing Heroes, and continues to blog at seobrien.com.

JIM SPENCER Jim Spencer has helped lead several start-up and established Internet and mobile content companies. In 2008, Jim founded Newsy, an early mobile, OTTV and online video news service that was acquired by the E.W. Scripps Company in 2014. Jim was VP of Content at Ask Jeeves (Ask.com) where he was responsible for all search queries and helped guide the company to the be the 15th most trafficked website and through a successful IPO. Prior to Ask Jeeves, Jim was the GM of News and Information Programming at AOL, advancing the content, business and partnership operations for one of AOL’s major business units. Jim has also served as executive director of partnerships for NBC based at NBC’s NYC headquarters and Microsoft’s Redmond campus (MSNBC.com) and as the GM of new media at Multimedia, Inc. prior to its sale to Gannett. Jim has a bachelor’s degree in film from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and a master’s degree from the Missouri School of Journalism.
